Annie Maria Saunders

Annie Maria born to Robert Saunders 2nd and Catherine Kincade born in Mathinna in 1900.

Annie married Frank John Polley around 1922 in Mathinna, Tasmania.

Annie and Frank had at least 4 children.

In 1936 Frank was working in Mathinna as a labourer and by 1943 Frank and Annie had moved to Launceston and were living in Cimitere street. Frank again listed as working as a Labourer.

Annie died in 1989 aged 89 years. She is buried at Carr Villa Cemetery, Launceston.

John (Jack) Augustine Saunders

John known as Jack was born to Robert Saunders 2nd and Catherine (Kincade) in 1984 in Mathinna, Tasmania.

John joined the Armed forces after his brother Leslies death in 1917. John was deemed Medically unfit for duty and in 1919 was working as a labourer in Mathinna. In 1928 he was listed as a miner and by 1944 he was living in Invermay Road working as a labourer. In 1949 Jack was back at Storeys Creek working as a miner.

Jack never married.

In 1966 Jack passed away and is buried at Carr Villa Cemetery, Launceston.

Leslie James Saunders

Leslie James Saunders born 1891 in Mathinna Tasmania, to Robert Saunders 2nd and Catherine Kincade.

Leslie joined the Australian Armed Forces in February 1915 and was sent for training in Queensland before being sent to Gallipoli.

Leslie fought on the Western Front for a few months before being struck down with Enteric fever and Pleurisy.

Leslie returned from France to recover where they held a reception for him at Mathinna. Leslie returned to health and was sent back to battle only to be killed, a few days after his return, in Lagnicourt, France on the 26th March 1917.

Leslie James Saunders name is written on the wall of the war memorial at Villers Bretronneax, France and has a memorial headstone at Mathinna cemetery.

Albert Edward Saunders

Albert Edward Saunders born in 1889 to Robert Saunders and Catherine Kincade in Mathinna, Tasmania.

Albert married Julia Vaughan in 1915, they lived in Invermay, Launceston. Albert working as a Train Conductor.

Albert and Julia had at least 1 child.

Albert and Julia divorced in 1943.

Albert died in Victoria in 1965 aged 76

Ernest Thomas Nicholas Saunders

Ernest Thomas Nicholas Saunders born in Fingal, Tasmania in 1886 to Robert Saunders 2nd and Catherine Kincade.

Ernest aged 32 married Gladys Blanche Brooks in 1918 in Mathinna, Tasmania.

Ernest worked as a labourer.

Ernest and Gladys lived in Mathinna their whole lives and had at least 7 children.

Ernest died in 1964 and is buried in Mathinna cemetery with Gladys.

Robert John Saunders

Robert John Saunders born 1882 in Fingal, Tasmania to Robert Saunders 2nd and Catherine Kincade.

Robert married Lily Ellen Emily Grace Matthewson in 1907. Lily, daughter of Jane Matthewson (nee Saunders) and John Matthewson, was Roberts 1st cousin.

Robert and Lily lived in Ringarooma for a large part of there lives and had at least 9 children. Robert worked as a Miner.

Robert moved to Launceston around the age of 70. He passed away in 1971 at the age of 88 and is buried at Carr Villa Cemetry. Lily died a few years later in 1974.

Children of Robert Saunders 2nd and Charlotte Cox

Robert and Charlotte married in 1863 in Evandale, Tasmania
Charlotte had 3 children to previous relationships.
  • David William Cox 1857 - 1937 father David Collins.
Charlotte was David Collins servant. David was Raised by Charlottes parents. David married Ellen Button and died in 1937.
  • John Edward Cox 1860 father Edward Scott.
John possibly also raised by his grand parents. John married Ellen Daymon lived in Evandale and died in 1923.
  • Female Howell 1862-1862 father Christopher Howell
Possible child of Charlotte.
Charlotte and Robert had 10 Children with only 2 surviving into adulthood
  • Female 1864,
  • Eliza Kate 1865-1865 died 5 days old, twin of Robert James,
  • Robert James 1865-1866 died 4 1/2 months old,
  • Sarah Jane 1867-1868 died 6 months old,
  • James Thomas 1870-1871 10 months old,
  • Male 1871-1871 stillborn twin of Charlotte Christina,
  • James Robert 1873 - 1874 18 months old,
  • Edward Thomas 1875 - 1875 7 months old, died from Atrophy,
The most common and possible cause of  so many of Charlottes babies dying at an early age is due to Sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhoea which cause failure to thrive in babies resulting in death.

Emma Eliza born 25th April 1869 5th child of Robert and Charlotte.
Emma was christened on the 7th July 1869 at St Andrews Uniting Church Evandale.
Emma lived in Evandale with her parents.
Emma's mother Charlotte died of peritonitis in August 1875 shortly after giving birth to her 13th child.

Robert, Emma's father remarried Catherine (Kate) Kincade and they moved to Mathinna, Tasmania around 1880.

In 1888 aged 18 Emma married John Gearing in Fingal, Tasmania. They lived in Mathinna and produced 8 children

  • Rose Mary Adelaide 1891 - 1979 married John Henry Williams
  • James John 1893 - 1957 married Irene Crawford
  • Robert Ambrose 1894 - 1910 aged 16 years
  • Emma Charlotte 1896 - 1897 aged 6 months

Emma Eliza Gearing died 8th April 1932 in Mathinna, Tasmania.

Charlotte Christina born 19th November 1871 to Robert and Charlotte. Charlotte was christened on the 13th February 1872 in St Andrews Uniting Church, Evandale.

Charlotte is the only surviving sibling of Emma Eliza.
Charlotte moved to Mathinna with her father, sister and step mother around 1880.

Charlotte married David Butcher in 1898, for an unknown reason David changed his surname and was also known as Mclennan and eventually Lewellyn which is what the family are known as today.
Charlotte and David lived in Cornwall, Tasmania and produced 9 children:
